“Down by the Riverside” (2020) by Antonio Filipo

$150

A special print edition of a stunning aerial photograph by Ōtara-based artist Antonio Filipo. The work was made in 2020 from a drone flying above Ngāti Ōtara Park in Ōtara, looking north to where the Ōtara Creek joins with the Tāmaki Estuary. The Tāmaki Estuary connects the South and East Auckland suburbs of Ōtara, Ōtāhuhu, Mt Wellington, Panmure, Glen Innes, Tāmaki and Pt England.

In 2020, the political electorate of Panmure-Ōtāhuhu was formed from the suburbs that sit alongside the Tāmaki Estuary.

This special limited edition print was produced to support the campaign of Green Party candidate, Fa’anānā Efeso Collins standing for the electorate of Panmure-Ōtāhuhu. Artist Antonio Filipo and Vunilagi Vou join a growing community of locals invested in political leaders who stand up courageously for people and planet. In October 2023, Fa’anānā Efeso Collins was successfully elected in the 54th New Zealand Parliament.

The limited edition of 20 A3 size prints have been produced on 100% cotton Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308 and printed in Tāmaki Makaurau. Sold unframed, signed and editioned, all proceeds go directly towards Fa’anānā Efeso Collins’ campaign for the 2023 General Election.

Description

Of Tokelau and Portuguese descent, Aotearoa New Zealand-born artist Antonio Filipo (b.1980) resides today where he was born and raised, in Ōtara, South Auckland. Taught by renowned Moana Oceania educators Mr Palalagitoa Manetoa and the late Mr Ian George in his senior years at Hillary College, Antonio was encouraged to further his arts education and went on to study Graphic Design at Manukau School of Visual Arts, graduating in 2003.

Antonio started making drone photography in 2017 and quickly grew a deep appreciation for the Ōtara landscape from the sky. Whilst Ngāti Ōtara Park was familiar terrain on foot, the park’s waterways, bridges and surrounding industry and neighbourhoods uncover how nature and humans quietly co-exist in the hood.

Antonio’s first solo exhibition, Ngāti Ōtara was produced by Vunilagi Vou and held in 2021 at The Alexander Cafe in Ōtara, South Auckland.
